Tour Description

We offer an exclusive tour of Andria’s historic center, which will take you to discover the ancient crypt of the Cathedral, home of Frederick II’s wives, the fascinating caves of the Sant’Andrea Quarter, CasaMseo Borgomurgia. This tour is a journey into the past, a unique experience for those who want to go beyond the surface and dive into the depths of our history.

Leading you on this 2-hour and 30-minute itinerary are the experienced and passionate guides of Turisti in Puglia Tour Operator. The tour has registered more than 4,000 visitors in its first two years.

We will meet at Largo Grotte, one of the city’s earliest settlements, which arose close to a group of karst hypogea known since antiquity as St. Andrew’s Caves. From here our journey into the history and underground of Andria begins.

In Largo Grotte and the Fellecchia Ward we will learn the sad tale of the “Andrian caves,” evacuated and then concealed in the 1950s.

We will continue to Casamuseo Borgomurgia. Together we will discover different floors of the ancient city; the origins and uses of evocative underground rooms, now restored and open to the public.

Finally we will reach the Cathedral Square to descend inside the crypt: an ancient church rich in treasures, originally placed on the ancient street level and later literally swallowed up by the present Cathedral Church.

Le pietre parlano

History becomes a tale. In the book “Le pietre parlano”, underground Andria provides the setting for a narrative that travels between fantasy and folklore.

A deep dive into a hidden world of wonder

The project of “Borgomurgia” and “Turisti in Puglia” stems from the desire to put in place a process that promotes the knowledge of the territory and cultural heritage of Andria, especially dwelling on that complex of underground places (underground oil mills, crypts and remains of early Christian churches, cisterns, minor buildings), sites of relevant historical-cultural and documentary interest not yet recognized as such, due to a lack of knowledge and promotion activities. These are mostly historical stratifications existing in much of the Apulian and Lucanian territory, characterized by a karst geology composed of ravines, quarries and caves.
